Install and Set Up SpineOMatic

Shows how to install and configure SpineOMatic for printing call number labels and marking slips using information from Alma.

Instructions are for SpineOMatic version 7

Prerequisites: Download and install the barcode font Free 3 of 9 (will need to be done by Desktop support). Also need an API key. These are assigned by the Core Services Team. Email [email protected] to request one.

Previous documentation directed you to go to this site at Boston College to download the SpineOMatic software. It was written by Boston College, but is no longer being distributed or maintained by Boston College.   1. Click on the word SpineOMatic.
  2. Scroll down to the README file and click on it.

There are currently two versions of SpineOMatic. These instructions are for version 7.

  1. Click on the Code tab
  2. Scroll down to V7
  3. Click on the triangle next to Assets.

  1. This is where the User Manual for SpineOMatic lives.
  2. The actual software lives here. Click once to download it.

You do not want to save this exe file to your Downloads folder. If you do, the program will disappear when you clear out the folder. In the Edge Browser, you will see this screen. If you click on the arrow next to Save, you will see a Save As option.

You will want to create a new folder for SpineOMatic.

  1. Navigate to the C: Drive on your computer.
  2. Click on New folder.
  3. You will see the default name of New folder highlighted in blue. Change this text to SpineOMatic and press Enter to finish the renaming.

  1. Highlight the SpineOMatic folder by clicking on it once.
  2. Click on Open.

You will see the SpineLabeler file. Click on Save.

Now click on Run.

SpineOMatic requires the .NET framework software 3.5. If you are able, you can download and install this software. Otherwise it will need to be added by Desktop support.

Windows (C:)

Once the software is installed, navigate to the folder on the C: drive where SpineOMatic now lives.

  1. Right click on SpineLabeler.
  2. From the drop down menu, you can Pin to Start
  3. Pin to taskbar,
  4. and next to Send to, you can even create a Desktop shortcut.

You can rename the shortcut to display SpineOMatic, instead of SpineLabeler.

Now Double click the icon to open the program.

Open and Configure SpineOMatic

Run SpineOMatic

Click on the triangle next to Review to open the configuration panels.

  1. Click on the Print Setup Tab.  
  2. Select the printer that you would like to use by clicking on the three dots next to the Printer field and selecting your desired printer from the list shown. The list will have local and networked printers.
  3. Choose your desired font for text by clicking on the three dots next to the Text font field. The font choices include all of the fonts that are installed on your computer. Ideally , you would want a Serif font, where you can tell the difference between 1's and lowercase l's, 12 pt. minimum, and bold type is allowed. Note: the font used for making call number labels is Courier New, 10 pt, bold.
  4. You will need to add the barcode font by clicking the three dots next to the Barcode font field. Select Free 3 of 9,  Extended font style, 18 pt. minimum, but not bold (some of the barcode readers have difficulty with bold type).
  5. Do not adjust the margins.
  6. Click on Save to record your changes.
  1. Click on the Call Number Format Tab.
  2. Next to Label Type, select the radio button for Spine to do the set up for making call number labels.
  3. If it isn't selected, select the radio button for SpineOMatic parsing, and check the box next to Include holdings.
  4. Click on Save to record your changes.

Other documentation is available that explains how to customize the flag slips (Marking slips) that are used by catalogers.

  1. Click on the Alma Access Tab
  2. Click on the radio button for Use RESTful API
  3. Copy/paste this URL: https://api-na.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com into the ALMA URL field (this allows SpineOMatic to communicate with Alma).
  4. Do not change anything in the Method field.
  5. Type/paste in your assigned API Key. See instructions at the beginning of this document to see how to get a key.
  6. Click on Save to record your changes.
