Batch Export Records from Connexion to MarcEdit by OCLC Number List

Set up Marc Edit's Z39.50/SRU client (only have to do this the first time)
  • Add-ins
  • MarcEdit Z39.50/SRU Client
  • Batch Mode

  • Under Select Local Database, choose OCLC Cataloging Service
  • Click Modify
  • Enter OCLC authorization and password
  • Click Save
Create .txt list of OCLC numbers, one per each line

Using MarcEdit's Z39.50/SRU client to import records

Click on Batch Mode

  1. Navigate to your .txt list of OCLC numbers
  2. Specify a destination file where the records will be saved (file name must end in .mrc)
  3. Click Custom under Search Types and type @attr 1=12 (this specifies to search anywhere in the record)
  4. Select OCLC Cataloging Service
  5. Click Retrieve Unicode box
  6. Enter UTF8 as Server Character set (in some versions of MarcEdit, this option is not present)
  7. Click green arrow at upper right to run

You get a report listing how many records were searched and how many were retrieved

And if records were not found from your search, there is a path to a .txt file that will show you what was not retrieved from OCLC.

Navigate to your .mrc file and double-click on it to break it with MarcEdit

This was MAGIC! :-)
Thank you for sharing your MarcEdit instructions.

I had a list of OCLC #s and was contemplating a multi-stepped dance of export-import-export into & out of my ILS. By directly pulling into the Z39.50/SRU Client, I saved an entire day of effort. This also clued me into a heretofore untapped MarcEdit plug-in.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Have a great day! :-D
